I met with a friend recently who asked me an interesting question:"what do you think about when you photograph a high school senior...in particular a high school senior girl?"my first thoughts are always:"who is this girl?""what are the different facets to her personality?"which always leads me to "what 'lights' this girl up?"very rarely - in fact extremely rarely do I meet single-faceted people...I don't think we're designed to be only into one thing with only one emotion ever expressed.nope, we're all multi-faceted...some of us more than others... ;)for some girls one of the facets to their personality is being into fashion...latest trends, chic wardrobes and marathon shopping on a Saturday light them up. :)for others a facet to their personality is their love of athletics...working themselves day in and day out to compete and be the absolute best they can at their sport.and still for other girls a large part of their multi-faceted personality is being into academics...this is SO not my strong point but I genuinely admire women who push themselves academically...they are the next #girlboss' in the making! *insert muscle emoji here* ;)and still yet for others their personalities bleed music or the arts...these women are in tune with their souls and emotions and have the incredible ability to express themselves in ways I can only imagine.yep, I think that going into a senior session - having that question "what are the different facets to their personality?" is key for me.people are interesting...YOU are interesting.getting to spend a concentrated amount of time getting to know and photograph the women you read about on this blog is something I don't take lightly...ever.that single question makes the work I strive to portray in these portraits unique, I think...I'm not always necessarily looking to photograph that perfectly-smiling-eyes-focused-on-the-camera portrait, that smiling portrait is a depiction of one of the facets to your personality, but it's not the only facet to your personality.I love when girls in front of my lens feel confident to stand tall and show their fierce and strong personality;I love when girls are comfortable enough to feel able to express their thoughtfulness in front of my camera,I love when their goofy personalities (largely in response to my spaziness/goofiness) rise to the surface and full body unforced laughs are photographed,I even love when clients bring tangible pieces of themselves to session:special jewelry handed down from grandmother's,sports memorabilia that tell tales of great moments, even stacks of books that signify the years of mental fortitude and endurance...so what about today's girl in this blog post...you're wondering about the different facets to her personality?well, it's obvious of her beauty...I've gotten to know this particular girl for the last four years and from day one her beauty astonished me.from day one we called her the black stallion and it so fits.incredibly long and beautiful jet black hair matched with unrivaled beauty...but she's not just simply beautiful - girls like that are a dime a dozen, nope, she's strong as well...and not an "in-your-face-let-me-show-you-my-muscles" kind of strong,no, her strength is a quieter strength that I'm excited to see grow as she heads into her college years.yep, black stallion fits.plus, she an incredible athlete, a disciplined (most-of-the-time) ;) student, she is well liked by friends and family and is someone I'm thankful to have gotten to spend time with and wished I had more with her every time I get to hang with her.this day and this session make me happy...largely in part because of the day spent adventuring with this beautiful multi-faceted girl that I love!
